Whatever it is you want in your life, you must give up the need to fixate on the outcome - and let it come to you in its own time. Our minds react emotionally when we don’t get our way and we tend to get fixated when our ideas about how things “should be” differ from how things actually are.

When we can surrender to whatever is happening in this moment and trust that things will work out as they are meant to - we’re able to relax our point of view and fully enjoy the moment as it is- without trying to change it. We start to appreciate all that we already have. This frees up more creative energy for us to go off and do what we do best- and we are now open to all possibilities. Fully embracing uncertainty!

I recently came across an amazing story from China about a stand-off between a driver delivering a shipment of 500 dogs to be sold as meat to restaurants, and 300 animal rights protesters who found out about the shipment of dogs for meat and decided to do something about it.

Police were called, but the truck driver wasn’t breaking any laws, so what ensued was a 15 hour stand off at a toll booth ending in the animal activists purchasing the dogs for $18,000 from the driver, about $36 a dog.

The dogs were sent to recover at 20 animal hospitals, and at an animal rescue compound. To read more about this issue, check out my blog about the dog meat festival that was canceled in Eastern China last year.

According to Ron Gutman, whose TED talk on the subject went viral, only a third of grown-ups smile more than 20 times a day, and less than 14 percent muster a grin more than five times in 24 hours. Pretty sorry stats considering all the benefits that flashing those pearly whites can bring. “Smiling can reduce thelevel of stress-enhancing hormones like cortisol and adrenaline while increasing mood-enhancing hormones like endorphins,” says

So, let me get this straight: kids smile an average of 400 times per day but as adults it drops to around 20 per day. Where the heck did those extra 380 smiles per day go? I just wanted to raise awareness of this loss of 380 smiles per day so hopefully more people will work on bringing them back into their lives!

An excerpt:

The Farewell Email

Yes, the time has come. I am giving my notice today and closing another chapter in my life. However, since you’ve been such a wonderful listener through all of my work/horror stories, I believe you should have a first glance at the letter that will end my tenure at this company. Let me run this by you real quick before I submit it. Tell me what you think. Does this work?

Dear Co-Workers,

As many of you probably know, today is my last day. But before I leave, I wanted to take this opportunity to let you know what a great and distinct pleasure it has been to type “Today is my last day.”

For nearly as long as I’ve worked here, I’ve hoped that I might one day leave this company. And now that this dream has become a reality, please know that I could not have reached this goal without your unending lack of support. Words cannot express my gratitude for the words of gratitude you did not express.

I would especially like to thank all of my managers: in an age where miscommunication is all too common, you consistently impressed and inspired me with the sheer magnitude of your misinformation. It takes a strong man to admit his mistake - it takes a stronger man to attribute his mistake to me.

Over the past two years, you have taught me more than I could ever ask for and, in most cases, ever did ask for. I have been fortunate enough to work with some absolutely interchangeable supervisors on a wide variety of seemingly identical projects - an invaluable lesson in overcoming daily tedium in overcoming daily tedium in overcoming daily tedium.

Your demands were high and your patience short, but I take great solace knowing that my work was, as stated on my annual review, “mostly satisfactory.” That is the type of praise that sends a man home happy after even a 10 hour day, smiling his way through half a bottle of mostly satisfactory scotch.

And to most of my peers: even though we barely acknowledged each other within these office walls, I hope that in the future, should we pass on the street, you will regard me the same way as I regard you: sans eye contact.

But to those few souls with whom I’ve actually interacted, here are my personalized notes of farewell:

To Scott: I will always remember sharing lunch with you, despite having clearly labeled it with my name.

To Bill: I will miss detecting your flatulence as much as you will clearly miss walking past my office to deliver it.

To Janet: Best wishes on your ongoing campaign to popularize these “email forwards.” I sincerely hope you receive that weekend full of good luck, that hug from an old friend, and that baby for your dusty ole’ womb.

To Eric: I left a new wristwatch on your desk. It is so that you might be able to still tell time even without your hourly phone call to let me know the copier is jammed. (Call Harry or Don – they’ll come by.)

So, in parting, if I could pass on any word of advice to the individual who will soon be filling my position, it would be to cherish this experience like a sponge and soak it up like a good woman, because a job opportunity like this comes along only once in a lifetime.

Meaning: if I had to work here again in this lifetime, I would sooner kill myself.

You guys! I am so kidding! The REAL letter was way boring and filled with officey type talk. I would have put you to sleep, trust me. This version is much better, but too bad I don’t have the cahonies to really send it out. Now wouldn’t that be funny!
